POLAND: EPP WELCOMES LANDSLIDE VICTORY OF TUSK AND THE START OF A NEW POLITICAL ERA

The President of the EPP, Wilfried Martens, has welcomed the unprecedented results of the elections in Poland and congratulated Donald Tusk, the leader of the Civic Platform – a member party of the EPP - for his victory. Martens congratulated the Polish Peasents Party (PSL) led by Waldemar Pawlak, also an EPP member party that is expected to join a coalition government led by the Civic Platform.

“Donald Tusk obtained an astounding victory which reflects the wish of the Polish people for the start of a new political era in the country. I am sure that Mr. Tusk and the Civic Platform, along with the PSL, will satisfy the hopes of the Polish citizens”, Martens stated.

“I am also convinced that a government led by Donald Tusk will be at the forefront of the European Union (EU) project. Poland is one of the largest countries in the EU and its contribution will certainly improve the policies of the EU in favor all European citizens”, he added.

“The EPP is particularly satisfied to see one of its member parties leading the government in Poland for the first time after the accession of the country to the EU in 2004. I am looking forward to work with Mr. Tusk as Prime Minister and to welcome him at the next EPP Summit amongst the heads of government and leaders of the EPP”, President Martens said.

Martens also sent his personal congratulations to EPP Vice–President Jacek Saryusz-Wolski, a leading figure of the Civic Platform, for the excellent results of his party.
