POLAND: TWO EPP MEMBER PARTIES FORM THE NEW GOVERNMENT
19-11-2007

The President of the European People’s Party (EPP), Wilfried Martens, has welcomed the announcement of the new governmental coalition in Poland comprised of two EPP members parties: the Civic Platform led by Donald Tusk and the Polish Peasants Party (PSL) led by Waldemar Pawlak.

The formation of the new Polish Government comes after the elections held in October and won by the Civic Platform.

It is hugely satisfying for the EPP to see two of its member parties leading the government in Poland for the first time since the country’s accession to the EU three years ago”, Martens said.

I am sure that a new political era is starting in Poland. The government led by Prime Minister Donald Tusk will be strongly committed to the European Union (EU) project”, he added.

Indeed, I am particularly satisfied with the statements already made by Mr. Tusk concerning the relationship with EU countries and other neighbours, such as Russia. The government headed by Mr. Tusk, and Mr. Pawlak as Deputy Prime Minister, will be positive not only for the Polish citizens, but also for the whole of the EU”, President Martens concluded.
